This massive monograph on seminal designer Alexander Girard covers virtually every aspect of his distinctive career. One of the most prolific mid-20th century designers, Girard’s work spanned many disciplines, including textile design, graphic design, typography, illustration, furniture design, interior design, product design, exhibit design, and architecture. Exhaustively researched and lovingly assembled by designer Todd Oldham, this tome is the definitive must-have book on Girard’s oeuvre. Many of the designs featured here have never before been published. Oldham carefully went through the entire Girard archive to uncover many treasures as well as all of the most recognizable works by Girard. Girard is well known for his bold, colorful, and iconic textile designs for Herman Miller (1952-1975), which are extensively featured. These were often featured in conjunction with furniture designs by his contemporaries Charles and Ray Eames, and George Nelson. His designs for La Fonda del Sol restaurant (1960) are an experiment with typography as a communication tool and large-scale environmental graphic. Textiles and Objects (1961) was a very influential New York store sponsored by Herman Miller that featured Girard's designs inspired by his travels and folk art collection. The Girard Foundation (1962) houses his own personal and extensive collection of folk art, textiles, toys, and objects from around the world. His complete environmental design for Braniff International Airways (1965) gave him the opportunity to work at all scales with color, graphics, textiles, and furniture design. He designed every aspect of the project himself, from the minute-sized sugar packets and the ticket counters to the graphic colors of the planes themselves. Alexander Girard's playful yet sophisticated designs continue to inspire new generations of artists and designers. The breadth and scope of his work is truly remarkable. This highly anticipated tome is the first major retrospective of this very accomplished and prolific designer, and has been painstakingly edited by renowned New York-based designer Todd Oldham.

Nothing in Constantinople is as it should be this winter of 525. It is unnaturally cold and the imperial court has fallen under the sway of both the restless shade of the wife of the dying Emperor, Justin, and of the very much alive Theodora, the former actress his gravely ill successor Justinian intends to marry. The city is in turmoil thanks to constant friction among factions dressed in racing colors. Rivalry runs deep between the Greens, supported by Theodora who recalls their past kindness to her family, and the elegantly dressed young thugs styling themselves the Blues. Keeping them in order falls to Theodotus, the City Prefect, who is nicknamed The Gourd and is a man notoriously adept at slaughter and magick. Thus when a wealthy philanthropist is killed in broad daylight in the Great Church, it isn't entirely surprising that the future ruler Justinian engages an anonymous young slave called John to investigate what many believe could be part of a conspiracy aimed at swaying the succession. Among the suspects in the murder of the wealthy Hypatius, and all that follows, are many whose lives might be touched by an emperor: from senators, churchman, and wealthy businessmen to laborers, beggars, and prostitutes.

Although Kinfolk is primarily about the Flanery family of Floyd County, Kentucky, it also offers an insightful look at a way of life unique to Appalachian America. Kinfolk is certain to make you laugh, cry, and marvel at the bond that unites this intriguing family. It describes in great detail what it was like to farm steep hillsides and mountaintops without the aid of mechanized equipment; it illustrates the sport of foxhunting as was performed by mountain men during the middle of the twentieth century; it provides a historical look at significant gun battles between feuding families; but perhaps most importantly, it provides a genealogical chart showing how the Flanery/Flannery family is related to the Dinguses, the Salisburys, the Halberts, the Crisps, the Hicks, the Stephenses and just about every other family in southeastern Kentucky. The author has meshed prose, poetry, and pictures into an informational and entertaining book chronicling his family's history. It is a must read for anyone who is related to the Flanerys or who is from Floyd County, Kentucky. It is also recommended to anyone who is interested in learning what it was like growing up in that part of Appalachia before the advent of four-lane highways and modern communication systems.
